American beauty and fashion writer, Kelly Dougher, writes for make-up advice website XoVain.com about the deaf perspective on beauty. She has to stare at those hands and lips all the time so she notices when they’re not in good order. Flakey lips or chewed nails? It’s all going to get noticed up by this discerning deaf lady.

Your lips are the first thing I notice about you, and the main thing that I focus on when we’re talking. That might creep some people out if they don’t know why I’m doing it, and I definitely had some teachers (who KNEW I have to read lips) mention my poor eye contact to my parents.
On the other end of the spectrum, I had one teacher, Mr. K., who was so concerned about me being able to read his lips that he trimmed his insanely bushy mustache at the beginning of the year.
In that spirit, let’s talk beauty tips for those of you who might know someone with a hearing loss, or those of you who just like to be prepared.

I think that noticing things like this is part of Deafhood.
We do it because we live that way.It is natural and unless someone points it out we know no different.

I teach BSL in class and I do think it is important to show nice hands with light nail polish. At the moment, my hands are horrible from all the moving and unpacking but when I start teaching next week, i will improve them on Sunday simply with simple filing, polish and moisturize
