Deaf News: Deaf musician James Holt chosen by superstar producer Brian Eno for arts festival

James Holt, a deaf singer/songwriter from Bolton, has been chosen by Brian Eno as one of his Curators Choice for the Noise Festival, which is a global charity based in Manchester.

His track ‘Whatever happened to John’ (hear it by clicking here) was described by Brian as “Brisk, funny, exciting. Great drumming. This track feels fresh and exciting to listen to”. Another track ‘I thought you were crying’ was rated as outstanding.

1010392_494346704016382_230270294_nJames was born bilaterally deaf and wears hearing aids in both ears. He was thrilled at being chosen by Brian Eno and said:

“I’m overjoyed that Brian Eno, a world-renowned composer and producer, chose my song ‘Whatever Happened to John?’ as part of the Noise Festival. I am particularly pleased because I record and produce my songs at home. The whole experience has been an amazing opportunity and I am very grateful!”

James has previously had some of his songs signed by Music and the Deaf and would love more of them to be signed.

He added:

“Having just graduated this year from Salford University with a First Class Honours I can now reflect fully on my time as a university student. I was apprehensive before I applied for DSA but once through the application process I realised that they could do so much for me. I received a lot of support with equipment (I received high quality headphones, software and a recording device for lectures) and I recommend any university student to take advantage of this opportunity. I have had resistance in the past from tutors doubting whether I would do well on Music and Music Technology courses but I found at university this was not the case. The tutors and staff were very supportive in helping me develop as a musician and composer and they have inspired me a great deal.”
