Go see: Solar Bear Deaf Youth Theatre to perform at International Youth Arts Fest in South-West London

 

Scotland’s Solar Bear Deaf Youth Theatre are coming to the International Youth Arts Festival, bringing their visually stunning production of The Birthday of the Infanta.

Told entirely without words, this is based on the story by Oscar Wilde of the birthday of the young beautiful Infanta whose uncle; Don Pedro decides to throw a party to celebrate her coming of age.

She is very hard to please and nothing amuses her so her uncle goes in search of the young man in the forest and persuades him to go back to the palace with him.

The Infanta and the party-goers on seeing the young man start to laugh. He thinks she likes him and he has fallen in love with her beauty but then he sees his reflection in a mirror where he sees his deformities, and realises she is laughing at him. He feels a fool and the only way he can show his despair is to dance – leading to tragic consequences.

This production was first performed in Glasgow in 2013 but DYT are bringing an updated performance to IYAF with a reworking of the storyline to make it even livelier, moving and visually beautiful. It has an original score by Ian Bustard that will be performed live during the performance.

This performance is suitable for all ages and is accessible to everyone.

Some of the performers will be the first cohort of students to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on the groundbreaking new BA in Performance delivered in BSL & English.
