Teresa Garratty: My cat, who has gone to kitty heaven, understood me better than humans did

Posted on August 19, 2015 by

Last month has been, quite frankly, crap. Why has it been crap? Because the best cat in the world went to kitty heaven.

No really, she was literally the best cat that ever existed.

1

I’d had her since I was nine years old.2

That’s 21 glorious years of cat ownership wiped out with one quick trip to the vets (I have a natural aversion to ALL vets now, just so you know.)

3

For all the haters (who I’m reliably informed are undoubtedly “gonna hate”), she was most certainly not “just a cat”. She was my best friend, my companion and taught me an awful lot….a bit like Obi-Wan Kenobi in cat form.

4

Despite giving her a boys name, (she looked just like the cat from the Felix adverts and I was nine…go away), she was always there for me. Especially so when I suddenly lost my hearing, which is a lot more than I can say for some of the humans at that time in my life.

5

And when I was at home alone, she was my very own little kitty alerting device, as her fluffy head would twitch in the direction of everything she could her that I no longer could.

6

She had her own way of silently communicating with me, which meant she was incredibly easy to be around.

7

As she got older, it became apparent that she had lost her hearing too. We would both be startled by anyone approaching us from out of sight.

8

And neither of us were quite sure of the volume of our own voices anymore….

9

We were like two peas in a pod who grew up together, side by side and I’d like to think that maybe she moved on, because she thought I was ready to go it alone…even though it doesn’t quite feel that way yet.

10

I’m not sure if it’s because we were both deaf, because I’m a big ol’ softy or because I’m a barmy cat lady but what I do know is that there will always be a little Felix shaped hole in my heart.

11

I miss you kitten-face.
