To mark the start of the new school year in September, British television presenter Angellica Bell is encouraging school children across the UK to learn British Sign Language.
The former children’s presenter has made a free educational video for national charity Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, to help raise deaf awareness in schools.

She said:
“I’m thrilled to be supporting the Let’s Hear It campaign for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, the charity transforms the lives of deaf adults and children and I hope that children will become more deaf-aware by learning the basics of British Sign Language.
“More than 800,000 people in the UK are severely or profoundly deaf, and 45,000 of those are children. This campaign is crucial in educating young people about deafness, and learning the importance of sign language is a perfect place to start.”

So there are hundreds of BSL teachers ready to start teaching in schools?!? I don’t think so, so how would such a project be implemented? This has to be seriously thought through if BSL is to be an effective component on the National Curriculum.
