According to Court News UK, two women have been given suspended sentences for their roles in claiming Access to Work funds.
Their article says:
A deaf woman and her 81-year-old mother-in-law have been spared jail for their involvement in a £1m benefit scam. Patricia Parke, 51, claimed pensioner Rose Parke was her support worker to rake in thousands of pounds in bogus benefit claims.

Obviously wrong for this woman to commit fraud here, but how many times has DWP, banks and others said to people ” just bring a family member along to help with interview/ phone call etc rather than provide a qualified interpreter or text service?

I certainly agree with you! The DWP are creating confusion and blurring the boundaries between carer and family members. Given this, the story here is hardly surprising. The DWP need to make matters more clear and stringent and that family members are NOT to be used for Access to work purposes. Such distinctions should eradicate these kind of stories or should do!

What is that ridiculous picture at the top of the Court News UK article?
It looks very much like they are mocking Sign Language and Deaf people and I’m not sure LC does its reputation any favours linking to that sort of material.
