Employable is the name of a jobs fair coming to the centre of Birmingham next week, aimed at those seeking work who may be Deaf or have another disability, and employers interested in giving opportunities to these job hunters.

The event comes to the Banqueting Suite of Birmingham Council House in the City’s Victoria Square, on Thursday September 14 between 11am and 2pm – with sign language interpretation provided.

It’s a new date after earlier plans to hold the fair had to be scrapped because of a clash with the General Election.

Before the fair itself, employers will have the chance to hear a series of inspirational talks and learn more about Disability Confident, the scheme aiming to help employers make the most of the opportunities provided by employing disabled people.

Figures from Action on Hearing Loss from a few years ago show that three out of four people with hearing loss feel their employment opportunities are more limited than those of their hearing peers, with almost 80% naming employers as the major barrier.

Employable is being organised by educational communication support agency cSeeker Ltd, in partnership with Birmingham City Council, the Department for Work and Pensions, Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, specialist Deaf employment service BID, and the Disability Resource Centre.

cSeeker Chief Executive Alex Orlov said: “We’re very excited to be involved in this event. We know that Deaf people find it disproportionately harder to find work, and we wanted to do something locally.

“We’re really looking forward to the day and talking to people there, and it’s a great chance for anyone looking for any kind of work, temporary or permanent, now or in the future, to chat to wide range of different employers in varied industry sectors.”

Employers to have confirmed so far they’ll be attending include Platinum People, Queen Alexandra College, HS2, CPD Online and the GI Group. More are expected to sign up in the coming weeks.

There is no need for job hunters to register in advance for this event – just turn up on the day.
