Deaf News: NDCS launches search for next generation of tech talent

Deaf young people across the UK can showcase their tech talents in a new competition run by the National Deaf Children’s Society.

The Design Your Own Tech competition was created to raise awareness of the daily challenges the UK’s 50,000 deaf youngsters face and how technology can help. Budding deaf designers aged 12-18 have until 13 October to submit their innovative ideas for the tech of the future.

Two lucky winners will get to present their ideas to product manufacturers and those with the power to make their designs a reality. They will also get a prize for their school, and can choose from an iPad, VR headset or Amazon vouchers.

Lucy Read, Head of Participation at the National Deaf Children’s Society, said: “With the right support, deaf young people can do anything anyone else can, so we’re always on the lookout for new gadgets and apps that might be helpful – but of course, the best way to find out what deaf young people want is just to ask them!

“Maybe they feel frustrated by what they use and want to make it better, or perhaps they have an idea that would make the perfect new invention. We want technology to meet deaf young people’s needs, so this is a chance for them to create the tech of the future.”
