Teresa Garratty: Go and see Knock Knock by Hot Coals Theatre

Posted on October 5, 2018 by

We have finally reached autumn, I think…it’s hard to say. The weather’s all weird these days but I had to put on a jumper at the weekend so I’m calling it. It’s autumn!

Things can seem to slow down and get a bit boring in autumn. You might find yourself thinking “I wish I could go outside and do something”, despite spending the recent heatwave sofa bound, on a chronic Netflix binge.

So what’s a deafie to do? How about take in a show? One that’s super deaf friendly and fun for all the family!

Hot Coals Theatre are back at it again with a quirky modern folk story for our times.

Their latest show is called “Knock Knock” and is a whimsical fairytale all about love and longing. Although the piece is styled with a cartoon, child-like quality, it still deals with some very poignant and moving topics. So get ready for all the feels!

The company have created a shared experience for both deaf and hearing audiences by removing ALL forms of language, spoken and signed.

Instead, they use an array of visual story telling techniques such as physical theatre, clowning and mask work.

There are some sound effects but they are always paired with matching lighting cues to ensure that people of all hearing levels are catered for. A very thoughtful and inclusive touch that you don’t get with mainstream Theatre.

As an autumnal bonus, it’s all set in the heart of a magical woodland which means you’ll feel right at home when you rock up in your cosy coat and scarf.
