Deaf News: Nick Sturley’s novel ‘Innocents of Oppression’ launched!

After 2 years and 200,000 words, last week saw the official launch of Nick Sturley’s new novel, Innocents of Oppression at Remark London.

Over 80 guests attended the successful launch party, including many leading figures from the Deaf world, including the British Deaf Association’s CEO David Buxton, Remark’s Mark Nelson, Deaf Parenting UK’s Sabina Iqbal, and Dr Paddy Ladd.

After Steve Crump of Action Deafness Books opened the speeches, Nick Sturley gave a talk about the process of writing the novel – his second after he self-published Milan in 2003 – over the last two and half years.

After signing the books, Sturley said: “It was a great launch and a fitting end to a long journey. For me, this end is only the beginning because the book’s now out and I do hope that it will make an impact on the big issue of the poor state of Deaf education here. It’s a work of fiction, yes, but it uses real–life experiences against the real Deaf education backdrop, which, I hope, will answer many unanswered questions. I’m really glad that the book’s finally published!”
