Deaf News: Washington’s real-life deaf world

The Washington Post has a feature today about H Street, near Gallaudet University. It’s a place that has become a social centre for the Deaf community in Washington DC and is thriving as a result.

Where the deaf work as waiters, bar tenders have learned sign language and people can be seen signing on the sidewalk, H Street is the go-to place for students of the nearby deaf-only university. The article tells how a new culural tension, between deaf and hearing people is rivalling those more traditional tensions between the black and white residents.
