This picture taken from Facebook shows an American Sign Language interpreter relaying President Obama’s words during a meeting at the Whitehouse. She is interpreting for Claudia Gordon (second from the right) who has recently been appointed as Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement. We wonder if Obama needed to remind the delegates not to talk over eachother.
If it can be done here..

Wow very good! Far better than here! I think British government is too narrow minded and old fashion as they think its difficult for deaf people or they say its too expensive to use interpreters – what a good excuse they are!

Actually, it’s not that surprising. There are interpreters all over in the federal government. It’s just that this is the most visible one right now. It’s pretty much if you need one, just ask and you get one. Heck, I don’t even work for them, but a family member does and *I* get an interpreter just for asking when there are family functions going on or public functions where the general population is invited.

Poor interpreter having to stand. Is that justice? I wonder how long the meeting lasted? Where’s the second interpreter?
Nonetheless, good publicity!

It is really rare to see Claudia Gordon, one of these FEW BLACK DEAF WOMEN who broke the glass ceiling in America – different from England as there are a lot of HEARING women in the field of world politics or government but there are no deaf or disabled women (except Baroness Tania Thompson – the Welsh Paralympian in the House of Lords.)

That appears to be Howard Rosenblum on the far right– also Deaf and Executive Director of the NAD. I could be wrong, but it looks like the back of his head… smile…

She was interpreting for Howard Rosenblum, not Claudia Gordon in the picture.

Dame Jane Campbell in the House of Lords has done far more in the field of poliitics and indeoendent living for disbaled people. Tania Grey-Thompson was an athlete. Big difference. Jane was also listed top of the most influential people with disabilities in the UK.
