Jen Dodds: Will ‘video texting’ app Glide really change my life? (BSL)

Posted on October 28, 2014 by

We Deafies love to keep in touch via the internet, so I thought I’d take a quick look at how our online communication has developed over the years…

MSN Messenger!

Remember MSN Messenger? Remember how people kept interrupting you to chat when you were trying to work?! I remember the interruptions… that’s why I stopped!

Twitter!

I just LOVE Twitter. I don’t find it interrupts what I’m doing because I choose when to read and reply to tweets.

Back when Twitter started, though, I didn’t want it. I thought didn’t need it.

Luckily, a friend of mine ignored me and set up Twitter account for me. I should thank them for that, because when I tried again later, Twitter was totally brilliant.

Facebook!

I think we all love to hate Facebook, or perhaps we hate to love it? Either way, it’s here to stay.

Personally, I find Facebook a bit of a “closed shop” – it’s insular, while Twitter is more open and broadens my mind.

WhatsApp!

Despite having Twitter, Facebook, Skype, FaceTime and probably lots of other things too, people kept telling me I needed to install WhatsApp. Of course, I avoided it because I don’t like change (and, really, how many ways do you need to have to contact me?)…

Recently, though, I gave up and downloaded WhatsApp. And do you know what? It’s great! Free photo messaging! What’s not to like?

I should have installed it ages ago.

Plus, I can send video messages through WhatsApp too. My life is now complete.

Oh.

Except it’s not.

Glide!

Just when I thought I had all my online/mobile communication sorted, along came Glide, which apparently, I must install in my phone ASAP.

According to my Deaf friends, Glide is just brilliant because it’s like text messaging, but in video, without the texts.

But I can already send BSL messages through WhatsApp and iMessage, and I can have live BSL chats using Skype or FaceTime!

So, why do I need Glide?!

Will Glide really change my life? If you think it will, tell me how!
