Following the news of the Leave vote, this morning’s article on Limping Chicken (which was not related to the referendum) has been delayed until next week.
This is the first time in four years that we have not published an early morning article on a weekday.
Instead, we will post an article later today about the referendum result.
We would like to know, in a sentence or two, what our readers feel about the result, and its possible effects for D/deaf people.
What do you think the possible consequences might be for D/deaf people in the UK?
How do you feel? Happy, or sad? Optimistic, or downcast?
Please comment in a sentence or two below – and be aware that your comment may be used in an article on our site. (please say so if you do not want your comment to be used on the site!)
Thanks

I feel anxious for the future and embarrassed that we have spurned the friendship of our European partners.

Tragic, utterly tragic, We are at the mercy of those that want to leave. I feel we will lose the support of our human rights with EU. It feel much worse than the austerity program. I am living with fear now.

I can tell you the Deaf were not even in the campaign for either side. Clubs here organised a day trip to the seaside instead, and most said they had no intention to vote too. Apathy has reaped its own reward, and the LC support for remain shows they know nothing about the issue too. Time to join the real world and get real awareness. You spent far too much time with deaf issues and not involved enough in the real world, Time to come in out of the cold ? wasn’t that the ‘remain ‘ argument ? Sorry, the freebies and trips to EU deaf junkets look like being over….

Very much saddened and my kids are too, as its going to affect their future for worse. The first bad news was that the pound has dropped to its lowest level in years and there’s more to come. People will complain about price rises, increase in mortgages etc. Government released information on expenditure and showed that only 0.37% is spent on EU, so little and we get so much out of Europe. We will miss the value that Europe bring to the UK and I may consider moving to Finland!

Erm.. project doom was the reason you lost. That and having incompetent politicians and vested interested trying to tell us what to do. This really, is now time for the 9m with deafness and loss to unite to fight their corner. Why do I feel BSL people will still think they don’t need anyone else ? well, now you really do. NO EU to fight your corner (As if they ever did anyway,Cameron claimed the credit !).

Mr Meldrew – you are so very Welsh and it is them (my home country with shame!) that turn the tide against Remain. Look to Scotland and Northern Ireland they understood the importance of being partners with the World. d/D people did listen and understood the issues – newspapers and television with subtitles don’t you forget was available to us and no we didn’t take a day out to the seaside. You mock us so unkindly! For some of us it is a very upsetting day. I also shared Tim comment about being embarrassed. Cameron should never have done this referendum.

So you are unwilling to accept the majority opinion of your own people ? Typically EU attitudes I must say. This isn’t about making the issue aware to deaf people, it was the fact they never engaged with hearing about it. I was fully involved with hearing and the campaign, I saw no other deaf there. There was real evidence deaf people, despite access, were just not interested in voting. So having fought for access to the issue, no-one considered they aren’t interested ? Of course We are,but rank and file… Some truisms may be upsetting it doesn’t change the facts. Forget being embarrassed we all have a LOT of work to do. (Which doesn’t entail running off to Finland !).

Nothing wrong with Finland. But I think most of the EU is this morning in shock, especially since when we went to bed last night, the news was telling how wonderful it was that the majority is voting that UK should stay in EU. I do worry what the future holds, but I fully understand UK wanting out. While the creation of the EU was to stop European countries attacking each other, it never took the step of protecting EU states from being vulnerable to other risks. Merkel acted as dictator and it was not in our best interests. Now EU is suffering the consequences of EU head’s poor decision. I sadly think this is the beginning of the end for all of us, as soon, many more countries will leave and Europe will once again be killing each other, as well as having other enemies killing us. I’ll stick with Finland, most definitely.

I accepted the result of the majority vote albeit sadly. I didn’t both getting involved in the debate/campaign since my mind was already made up with this oppressive government – we needed EU to safeguard us with this forthcoming European Accessibility Act sadly it will not happen. I do feel EU will collapse with other country having already right wing militant wanting the very same. We might be harking back to the good old days where we fight to survive rather than work as partners to survive. But please Meldrew don’t attack d/Deaf people it is about EU voting.

The result is hugely disappointing, especially here in Scotland where every single council area voted to Remain. But we are where we are. We have to stop whingeing, buckle down and do our very best to make this work. For example, we must demand our own disability charter for the UK, at least as good as whatever is planned for the EU.

I’m backing the UK of course. Do you think moving to Finland (!!?) will, prevent these Europeans at each others throats ? It’s not the beginning of the end, but a start of a NEW beginning, a great opportunity for us as deaf/disabled and HoH people to support and include each other. I hope they seize that opportunity. A lot of good can come from Brexit, see the positives, not the ‘remain’ negatives 24/7, which after all, lost them the argument. They reported billions lost in the stock exchange and blamed Brexit, when in fact it was speculators in the city of London gambling YOUR money on a remain win. We could start with uniting BSL and HoH groups under one banner, then sorting out the complete mess that is support charities. If we ant political representation then we all HAVE to unite because BSL deaf in number cannot fight a political seat anywhere on its own, suggestions as to a party for us all ?
