A Deaf American man has written about the abuse he faced in a cafe just hours after Donald Trump’s victory in the Presidential election.
In a Facebook post, later shared by Nyle DiMarco, he said:

Democracy rules – so the Americans population voted for a bigot – do you expect me to have sympathy when we in England have the bloody Brexit and like us feeling very vulnerable…. The world at large have become a very sick society – it is not that it is abled bodied so does disabled and d/Deaf people that also have voted bigotry and it is instilled in them…. down to lack of good quality information and awareness and the media had a big play to **** us all up…….I move onto another sensible coffee bar and paint the ****** walls white BIGOT!! . The legal system sucks and deaf orgs sucks too for being a weak sick poodle with their self agenda. I am utterly fed up.

God, this is appalling. Nyles DiMarco has worked incredibly hard to get to where he is right now. He’s also clearly done a huge amount to inject deaf awareness into mainstream society in the US. For some walking microcosm to accost him that way in a public place is a shocking thing to read about.

To be clear, (as I saw the original tweet), Nyle DiMarco didn’t directly experience this. He was retweeting and commenting on someone else’s experience. Shocking all the same.

Nyles DiMarco wasn’t the one attacked. He retweeted the story when he heard about it to help draw attention to it. No acceptable behaviour though whomever it was directed at😡

This is a time of uncertainty, so it’s important to share these stories and build support, but I don’t think we should generalize from the actions of one or a few goons to a whole group of people, many of whom voted for the other candidate. It is upsetting that no one intervened, but then again they may have been shocked too, and it takes courage which not everyone has. My suggestion is to ask Starbucks to be extra vigilant in protecting their customers.

One of the many reports of hate crimes pouring in against minority folks of every stripe. The hatred has been there, but clearly some people have taken recent events and Trump’s example as a catalyst to act out. Just to clarify, Nyle DiMarco reposted this but it did not happen to him. Also, the original poster’s gender is not indicated anywhere in the post.

Note to self – high temperatures and social media do not mix! I probably look like a daft, ranting microcosm myself, now. D’oh!
Still shocked at the behaviour that poor man encountered, but will cheer myself up with the thought that there are lots and lots of good people in this world, making the idiot in the cafe look even more like an idiot.

I am not sure the person attacked is Deaf. That is not what has been claimed by the individual or by Nyle. The person was speaking in ASL on a video call. Not that it changes the tone, or intent. But I think it is important to get the facts right. Also, take note that it does mean that allies are also targets.
