The UK hearing loss charity Hearing Link has joined forces with Patient Opinion to make it easier for people with hearing loss and their families to report back on their experiences of NHS services.
Patient Opinion is an independent and non-profit organisation that gathers patient feedback on health services in the UK. The feedback is then shared with NHS professionals and managers to help shape future service provision.
You, a family member, carer or friend can give your feedback through the Hearing Link website. Just go to www.hearinglink.org/patient-opinion.
Dr Lorraine Gailey, Chief Executive of Hearing Link, said: “Patient feedback is essential for the NHS so it can learn from individual experiences and use them to shape the way in which it delivers future services.
“I would encourage anyone with hearing loss that uses NHS audiology services or related NHS services to feedback their experiences – good or bad. You can be sure by completing the online form on our website that your view will reach the people who can make a difference to these essential services.”

Am I the only person getting fed up with this dreary phrase, ‘hearing loss’?
Deaf people don’t benefit much from medical-model terminology. Charities, on the other hand…

Here here Tim …I couldn’t agree more…. that Hearing Link is so very medical model able-led and they always have been – very surprise they have suddenly become proactive in this sort of work.

Do you really think services are going to improve as a result of our feedback? Not on your nelly!
My audiology department used to have a “first come first served” appt system. About 3 or 4 yrs ago it changed to a “booking system” so if u have a troublesome hearing aid and need to swop while its sent for repair, whoe betide you! You may not get an appt for a month!! Then you send off your hearing aid for another month!!
They say its better booking in! I am astounded that they think this is an improvement for deaf people! Improvement my eye! It is ten times worse! On top of that deaf people can have difficulty booking the appt to start with. They have no text number to book by mobile and I know they wont be using Skype or facetime!!
Most people who work in audiology havent got a clue about deaf people and their lives. They have no deaf awareness whatsoever! For audiologists I think deaf awareness is compulsory!
I shall not be using their link as I know nothing will change the appointment system for all the money in China!
They are too arrogant to change things for our good and only think about their good!!

Not sure about England, Wales and Northern Ireland, but here in Scotland Audiology is assessed periodically against a number of formal agreed standards – things like accessibility and communication. Audiology in Scotland is definitely improving over time because of these standards, though probably not as quickly as some people would like. Perhaps Hearing Link’s “Patient Opinion” venture will lead to improvements in the rest of the UK. Certainly worth a try, I would have thought.
