Recently we shared a fantastic Deaf Awareness video from BSL Bridge, which went viral during Deaf Awareness week.
Now, in the run-up to the referendum on Britain staying in the European Union, they’ve made another fantastic video explaining the history of the European Union and giving links to further information.
A BSL translation (made by Drip Media) of the government’s leaflet explaining why it believes staying in the EU is best for Britain was released last week and can be seen by clicking here.

Although I don’t understand BSL 100% (maybe 75%), I understood the whole thing, mostly thanks to my knowledge of the history after WW 2. How it is presented is cute, starting with the black’n-white TV in low resolution, then higher resolution and then in color as a metahor of how the European Community evolved. The information contained is very basic, just a skeleton. A few bones of the history is missing, but it does not affect the understanding of the big picture. There was an Eurpean Atomic Union, European Defense Union concurrently with NATO,which no longer exists. Outside these formal structures, there are several informal associations that promotes travel, athletics and cultural exchanges.
This information alone would not help one to vote Yes or No on the question of membership in the Union. You need to know the pros and cons. Hopefully, BSL Zone brings a sequence or two delineating them.
