The first programme in BSL Zone’s brand news Close Up: Paddy Ladd Trilogy is on TV this week.  Tessa Padden interviews Dr Paddy Ladd, who is known worldwide for coining the term Deafhood.

Paddy is open and honest about how difficult his childhood was; his mother died when he was eight and he was one of the first deaf children to be educated in mainstream schools. This experience, which he describes as ‘Hell’, underlies his opposition to mainstream education for D/deaf children.

In the video on this page, you can watch a short ‘behind the scenes’ film that explains why the producers, Tessa Padden and Bob Duncan, decided to make a trilogy about Paddy.

Close Up: Paddy Ladd (Part 1) will be available to watch on the BSL Zone’s website and app from 8pm on Thursday 18th January.

You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play if you haven’t already done so (UK and Eire only).
