The BBC’s See Hear programme has interviewed a Deaf couple who run an B&B in Somerset, and the video has now also been released online. The text says:
Running a B&B can be a challenge for most owners, something Piers and Magdalena – who are profoundly deaf – know all too well.
Together they run the Summerhouse Bed and Breakfast in Pensford, Somerset.
They communicate with their hearing guests using sign language and prompt sheets.
Their story is featured in the latest episode of See Hear and can also be seen below:

It is about high time that we cease mentioning how deaf someone is, like profoundly deaf or severely hearing impaired or even being hard-of-hearing. We are simply deaf, regardless the severity. When I say I am deaf, it just means ethnically. When confronted why I don’t respond to shouting or car huping, I would respond “I don’t hear”, instead of “I’m deaf” or “I can’t hear”.
Thus my motto, “I am deaf but not my ears”. Why should you advertise your inability to hear? Why should you emphasize the importance of the ability to hear, thereby strengthening the audism in the society?
