The charity’s press release says:
Hate Crime – has it happened to you?
Have you ever been bullied or harassed because of your Deafness? Have people physically hurt you because you are Deaf? Have you been pushed, spat at, or laughed at, because you were signing?
Did you know that these are all examples of Hate Crime incidents?
What is hate crime? According to the Met Police:
“A hate crime is when someone commits a crime against you because of your disability, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or any other perceived difference.”
Examples of hate crimes include:
- (D/deaf or hearing people) using offensive language towards you
- (D/deaf or hearing people) behaving aggressively towards you
- Harassing you by posting abusive or offensive messages about you online
DeafPLUS has released a short 5 minute film about hate crime; what it is and what you can do if you want to report it.
- If it’s has happened to you, or you feel you have been targeted because of your deafness, disability, sexuality, race, religion or health issues, you can seek advice on what you can do.
- You could be advised to ask the police to investigate the incident as a Hate Crime or be signed posted to an organization that can help you.
How to get help: By using deafPLUS BSL Advice Line you can contact a member of staff to discuss what has happened to you. The Advisor will be able to advise you on what to do next, where to go to get help or how to report an incident.
