Deaf News: Irish national anthem performed in sign language for the first time

The Irish national anthem, Amran Na Bhfiann was performed for the first time in public yesterday, thanks to the efforts of a Deaf student called Alain Newstead, from County Cork.

Last year, his school had a visit from the Mayor of Cork, with the students expected to perform the anthem. This left out the school’s Deaf students. Following this, Alain Newstead wrote to the government about the issue.

Yesterday, the signed national anthem was officially performed for the first time by a deaf choir and a piper. Watch it below:
