Sign our petition calling for multiplex cinemas to dedicate one screen to subtitled films, which has 26,000 signatures, here.
In a sign of the growing frustration among deaf people at the cinema industry’s lack of action to increase the availability of subtitled screenings, a deaf girl called Briar from Walsall has protested outside The Light Cinema in Walsall for more subtitled screenings.
The story came to light through a series of tweets yesterday and appeared to prompt a positive response from the cinema (see their tweet at the bottom of this post):

@Limping_Chicken Briar, who is in year 6, is campaigning for better subtitling #access at her local cinema in Walsall. What a star – staging a protest outside the cinema.

Thanks for asking – fine to use my quote. Really pleased that Briar's efforts are being recognised – she's a very passionate campaigner for human rights, and such a great advocate for this generation of #Deaf children. We in her local community are very proud of her!

After speaking with @gazbo1975 & @lilleth1973 today about Briar's campaign we can't wait to meet her and work together with the Sandwell Deaf Community Association to make a positive change! 😃👍

I have been seeing more and more media attention regarding subtitles. How is this still an issue? There should be subtitles in all movies so anyone wanting to watch it can enjoy. Good for her for standing up and voicing her opinion!

The movie theatres are the wrong address to protest for lack of captioning/subtitling. The subtitling should be done by the movie industry as part of the normal production of ANY film. Any film released to be shown in theatres should already contain the subtitles. The address of your protest and petitions should be toward the production companies. The theatres are only responsible to own the needed equipment to display them and employ them in their showings.
