Deaf model and activist Nyle DiMarco has criticised Netflix for the portrayal of a character pretending to be deaf in their rom-com Sierra Burgess Is a Loser.
The scene in question shows the main character pretending to be deaf, before being found out. DiMarco calls it a “terrible joke.”
He has also criticised the show for what he sees as “homophobic and transphobic jokes.”
Indie Wire has reported:
The scene in question centers on the first in-person meeting between Sierra Burgess and her love interest, Jamey.
The two have been talking over the phone and Jamey is unaware of what Sierra actually looks like since he is under the impression he is taking to another girl, Veronica (Kristine Froseth).
When Sierra’s friend Dan (RJ Cyler) forces her to meet Jamey in person, Sierra pretends to be deaf so that Jamey won’t recognize her voice. The joke of the scene is that Jamey’s younger brother is deaf and therefore Jamey is fluent in American Sign Language, so he instantly picks up on the fact that she is signing incorrectly.
Jamey’s younger brothers is played by Cochise Zornoza, who DiMarco noted is deaf in real life.
While the activist praised Netflix for casting a deaf actor in the role of a deaf character, DiMarco took issue with the young character being used to set up a joke involving Sierra pretending to be deaf.

I have to say that acting in this film was brilliant for a serious film. It was a mixture of Cyrano de Bergerac and the modern world of Catfishing. The actors took their roles seriously but the comic elements were a bit lost on them – it turned out into great serious acting performance with silly moments.
The fact that pretending to be deaf is of poor taste but the character were doing other things that were of poor taste – that was the point. But it didn’t come out like that.
A better script writer would have helped. Perhaps the point in case is that a deaf person should act the part of a deaf character but perhaps a deaf writer should script the part of the a deaf character too.

What’s the fuss? Why can’t character pretend to be deaf? No harm done. Bloody crybabies need to disappear.

John Walker’s comment is valid as we in the UK are somewhat more societal-tolerant and see the potential in such issues than in the US.
It’s interesting that Nyle raised the issue only a few days after Serena Williams’ tantrum in the Open Final exposing deep-seated gender prejudice went viral!
I can see where Nyle is coming from.
He is looking at the ‘status’ of Deaf people in Media & Entertainment…..
Deaf people still have a long way to go in achieving parity in society, well-being and economically, similar to the constant undermining of Black people in Western society.
Nyle’s reaction reflects the general frustration of Deaf people being ‘used’ as fraud / cheating, this hits a raw nerve within those of us dealing with constant disadvantage and bias.

Honestly, I’ve watched this film and the scene they’re talking about what just hugely embarrassing. In a good way but yeah. Sierra was thrust into this situation and she just panicked and started signing.
Personally, I didn’t find it offensive at all, particularly because she almost immediately gets called out on her terrible signing.
