A new episode of Deaf Funny has been released today, and its sketch about a Hearing Awareness Class has already clocked up 3000 views on Facebook.
The sketch is a reversal of the usual situation, showing some Deaf people attending a ‘Hearing Awareness’ class in a world where hearing people are in the minority.
The new episode of Deaf Funny features a range of new characters, plus the return of some old ones, such as the Cowboy Interpreter, BSL Police, Football Manager and the Hugger.

Deaf Funny is written and directed by this site’s editor, Charlie Swinbourne, with additional writing from Jean St Clair, Matt Kirby and John Smith.
It’s a co-production between Eyewitness Media and Wellington Films, and funded by British Sign Language Broadcasting Trust.

This could be funny but it reminds me very much of the book written by H G Wells who wrote a book called Country of the Blind. It is about the country run by blind people and they have heard of visually sighted people outside their country.

I actually taught hearing awareness and this sketch is exactly how I start. It makes people think there is no duality. In order to understand what it means to be hearing in a deaf space, we need to understand what it means to be deaf in the first place and how Deaf people can form healthy relationships as themselves. (e.g. we do not need to pretend to be hearing in order to be hearing friendly!)
