Deaf News: Deaf woman named NCT Volunteer of the Year

Alison Stephenson from Darlington has been named NCT Volunteer of the Year at the national NCT Stars Awards, which fittingly took place at the Space Centre in Leicester.

The award is presented to an NCT Volunteer who has gone above and beyond expectations and made a significant impact on new parents’ lives and wellbeing.

As Regional Coordinator for the North East, Alison led a re-energisation of the entire NCT network in the area and transformed some struggling branches. She also supported NCT’s Hidden Half campaign to ensure all new mums with mental health problems receive the support they need. Alison is deaf and made an amazing video to spread the word of the campaign with sign language and subtitles.

Juliet Mountford, Executive Director of Parent Services at NCT said:

“Alison embodies the spirit of NCT’s founder, Prunella Briance. Whenever something has to be done, she goes ahead and does it. She truly goes above and beyond to ensure all local parents feel supported and is a very worthy recipient of this year’s NCT Volunteer of the Year Award.”

In accepting the award, Alison said: “I’m delighted to have won this award! Volunteering with NCT can be really good fun as well as hard work. I’ve enjoyed helping new mums and dads across the North East and have found it very rewarding to support them on their journey as parents.”

Anyone interested in volunteering for NCT or finding out about activities and events in their area can contact the local NCT branch via NCT’s website or call NCT’s enquiries line on 0300 330 0770.
