British-Jamaican poet Raymond Antrobus, who won the Ted Hughes award for poetry in March, has had his poem Dear Hearing World adapted into a new short film.
Starring deaf actress Vilma Jackson, the video sees her “powerful and thought-provoking performance in British Sign Language” mix with music and “striking urban London scenes”.
On YouTube, Antrobus’ piece is described as one which “calls out ‘audio supremacy’ and asks us to acknowledge the deaf protagonist’s defiant indignation at their treatment by the hearing world”.
Watch the full short film with subtitles below:
By Liam O’Dell. Liam is a mildly deaf freelance journalist and blogger from Bedfordshire. He can be found talking about disability, politics, theatre, books and music on Twitter and his website.

Just asking, is it true the film was made by a full hearing film crew, though the poem and performer are fluent BSL users?
Because for us BSL viewers, we seem to miss out the whole expression of the poem, via our sign language in the film.
