The Guardian has published an obituary for sign language interpreter Alan Haythornthwaite, who sadly passed away last week.
The obituary, which was written by Jill Jones, describes him as “a leading figure in the field of sign language interpreting. A gentle giant, he was widely regarded as being the best in his profession – by both deaf and hearing people – and was loved for his enigmatic smile and good humour.”
Among his many achievements, Haythornthwaite was the co-founder of the Deaf Broadcasting Campaign, which led to subtitling and sign language on television, through the 1990 Broadcast Act.
