Eastenders to air ‘silent episode’ at 8pm tonight on BBC1

BBC1’s long-running soap Eastenders is to air a special ‘silent episode’ tonight, featuring the character of Ben Mitchell, who has been dealing with further loss of his hearing.

The episode, which follows Ben as he tries to prove himself to his father Phil, will feature limited audio, fractured sentences and subtitles to reflect Ben’s level of deafness and how he understands the world.

The editor of Limping Chicken, Charlie Swinbourne, was Story Consultant on this episode, having pitched the storyline of Ben’s deafness and the new Deaf character Frankie to the writers on the show last year. The National Deaf Children’s Society also offered advice and worked on the storyline, including this special episode.
