The BBC’s long-running drama Casualty returns to our screens tomorrow night (Saturday 11th July) with a special landmark episode made by deaf creatives in the major production roles.
It’s on BBC1 at 8.25pm, and will be available on iPlayer from then on.
The episode, which is about a day in the life of Jade, a deaf nurse, stars two deaf actors, was written by two deaf writers, and was directed by a deaf director. Deaf sign language advisers were also part of the production.
In the story, Jade meets her biological mother for the first time, and finds that her mother is not who she thought she would be.
So who are the deaf team behind this episode? We list them below!
N.B. Further down the page you can see some further links and videos which have been released by the programme’s social media channels.
Gabriella Leon plays Jade and has been part of the Casualty cast since November 2018. She was the first disabled regular cast member in the show’s history. Read about her here.
Sophie Stone also stars in the episode. Sophie was trained at RADA and has appeared in shows such as Dr Who and dramas like Coming Home. She also has extensive credits in theatre. More info here.
Sophie Woolley co-wrote the episode, and as well as being a writer with lots of credits in theatre, radio and screen, is also an actor. Find out more about her here.
Charlie Swinbourne co-wrote the episode, after also being involved in Eastenders’ recent deaf storyline. Charlie has written comedies, dramas and made documentaries involving deaf characters and contributors. He also works as a journalist (and is the editor of Limping Chicken). How exciting. However, the article says that Gabrielle Leon is the first disabled actor on casualty, but she most definately is not! There is an autistic actor who has been on casualty since 2016, Jules Robertson, just for everyones information 😉

Jules Robertson has in fact been in Holby City since 2016 not Casualty.
