Watch: Casualty episode focusing on deaf characters

You can now watch Saturday night’s Casualty episode, which was made by a team of
Deaf creatives, on BBC iPlayer (available in the UK) by clicking here.

The episode focuses on regular character Jade, who meets her birth mother for the first time. Both characters are played by Deaf actors, Gabriella Leon and Sophie Stone.

We see how Jade adapts when she realises that her mother is also deaf and watch how both characters adapt to one another’s communication needs, while also trying to reconcile their pasts.

The episode was written by two deaf writers, Sophie Woolley and Charlie Swinbourne (who is also the editor of this site) and was directed by deaf director John Maidens.

There’s been a lot of publicity around the episode, with articles in Digital Spy, Drama Quarterly, What’s On TV and the BBC Writersroom blog. There was also a Facebook livestream conversation (with live subtitles) that followed the episode’s transmission.
