The deaf health charity SignHealth will carry out new research into services and support available to UK Deaf women who have experienced domestic abuse, it has been announced.
The study, in collaboration with Manchester Metropolitan University, looks to speak to Deaf women who have not used SignHealth’s domestic abuse service, with the aim of reaching a wider Deaf audience.
“There is currently no up-to-date research available about Deaf people experiencing domestic abuse.
“This research will help us to develop a better understanding of Deaf women’s experiences of domestic abuse and how domestic abuse services for Deaf women can meet their needs.
“We hope Deaf women will come forwards to help us with this research so that better support is available in the future for women who are being abused,” SignHealth said, in a video about the project.
All participants’ responses will be kept confidential, with interviews conducted by an independent Deaf woman over Zoom.
Those interested in taking part in the research can contact research@signhealth.org.uk if they would like to share their experience, to receive more information from SignHealth in English or British Sign Language (BSL).
The charity can also signpost individuals to the right services should they feel distressed after sharing their experiences.
