Deaf fans of The Great British Bake Off have taken to Twitter to complain about a lack of subtitles this evening, as Channel 4 continues to deal with technical difficulties.
The issues come after fire suppression systems were activated at Red Bee Media’s Broadcast Centre in West London on Saturday.
The company, which provides access, distribution, playout and post-production services for Channel 4, also works with other national broadcasters such as ITV and the BBC.
In a statement posted to Twitter at the weekend, Red Bee said: “We confirm that all staff at our Broadcast Centre in West London were safely evacuated following activation of the fire suppression systems this evening. As a result of this incident and the automatic safety measures set in motion at the time, several services originating from the Broadcast Centre have been disrupted.
“London Fire Brigade attended the scene, and once they had determined that the building is safe, people were allowed to return to the building. We are continuing to work to restore all services and remedy any issues caused by this incident.”

On Sunday, the organisation said they are continuing to “work towards full service recovering” and are “investigating what triggered the fire suppression systems”.
They added that any statements around the cause of the disruption will be given once they have concluded their investigations, and have a “full picture” of what happened.
However, issues were still reported on Tuesday, when subtitles failed to appear on Channel 4’s popular baking programme. People soon took to Twitter to raise concerns:
.@Channel4 no #subtitles on #GBBO tonight? Neither on Freeview nor on your app ☹ (and yes, before you ask, I DO have the subtitles switched on) #accessibility

Hey @ch4! Why are there no closed captions/subtitles for #GBBO ? (Yes the function is definitely switched on on my TV. I’ve checked.) Can’t believe I am even tweeting this. Is this 2001 or 2021? So much for accessibility.

I know that @Channel4 are focusing on keeping their shows and signal running, but many people have been asking me when they will restore subtitles.
Many, many people rely on them on a daily basis and need them to enjoy television. I hope restoring it is a priority.

No subtitles on @Channel4 for #GBBO – what a shame, I’m not able to watch as I cannot follow what is being said 😢 so many deaf and hearing impaired viewers are currently excluded from being able to watch the show at the time of broadcast. @RNID @LiamODellUK @RedBeeMedia

@Limping_Chicken @LiamODellUK channel 4 have had no subtitles since the weekend. Rumour of a fire in a building. Possibly no subtitles for a while?! #channel4 #subtitles #deaf

The issues were acknowledged by Channel 4 prior to Bake Off being broadcast, with the channel tweeting: “Sadly we’re still experiencing some tech issues which means some viewers may have problems watching our channels or access services.
“Sorry for the ongoing disruption – we’ll let you know here as and when we have updates.”

Update – 29.09.21: In a statement to The Limping Chicken, a spokesperson for Ofcom – the broadcast regulator – said: “We have received complaints about ongoing issues with TV subtitling and audio description, following an earlier incident at Red Bee Media’s broadcast centre in west London.
“Given the concerning impact on people with hearing and visual impairments, we are in regular contact with the affected broadcasters to monitor the steps being taken to restore these access services as quickly as possible.”

There have been no subtitles on CH4 and associated channels (eg. E4, etc) for some time. It seems that it’s not their priority to restore subtitles – which is discrimation against Deaf viewers, and in breach of the Equalities Act 2010.

I am sorry but I was surprised that they don’t have back-up subtitle system in other locations ?!?! Ofcom need to look into it.

In the grand scheme of things it’s a small thing, but really it’s an overall reminder of how easily isolated we are from mainstream society

I watch countdown daily, not once has there been an apology or explanation why no subtitles. I didn’t know about the fire! Question? Would hearing people be left without sound? thanks Jan Harris

Please fix subtitles for channel 4 and E4 ASAP as they are still not working! It has been over 5 days. I’m profoundly deaf and am missing all my favourite TV programmes on channel 4.
Please don’t forget about us deaf and hard hearing people

This is a very unfortunate issue for the channel and the people it is affecting. It is also unfair that some people lose the privilege of watching their favorite shows because of technical issues. This problem should be a priority to fix so that everyone can have the opportunity to watch and use subtitles.

This is unfair to the channel and the people it is affecting because of technical issues. It isn’t right that some people are deprived of watching what they want because they can’t use subtitles. This issue should be a priority in fixing so people have the opportunity to use subtitles if they need/want.
