Posted on October 2, 2021 by

Tonight, deaf actor Rose Ayling-Ellis, and her fellow dancers, face their first public vote as Strictly Come Dancing hots up!

Charlie Swinbourne will be live blogging all the ins and outs of the next two hours, with Liam O’Dell on our Twitter feed, chipping in with his observations too. Refresh this blog for regular updates, or follow our Twitter account!

Most recent updates posted first – scroll down to go back to the beginning!

21.10 – that’s it for tonight! My hands are tingling and I’m sure Liam’s are too, as he’s been doing all the Twitter updates plus finding time to chip in on this live blog too! Thanks so much for reading.

It’s been another strong week from Rose Ayling-Ellis although there’s still viewers who feel that the judges aren’t scoring her highly enough. She’ll be hoping to increase her scores as time goes on, to compete with some of the couples who are excelling.

Rose is now second favourite among many bookmakers, with AJ now the current favourite to win.

The results show is tomorrow night (Sunday 3 October) at 7.05pm on BBC One. The two couples with the lowest number of points will go head-to-head in a dance-off and the judges will then vote again to decide which couple will be eliminated.

20.57 – The scoreboards so far are announced, with AJ and Kai at the top, followed by John and Johannes. Rose is just below the middle, with 48 points so far.

The phone numbers for all the contestants are posted. Not hugely deaf friendly, since they all ask people to make a phone call… but you can also vote on the BBC website, thankfully. Just click here! Voting closes at 9.25 tonight so be quick!

20.52 – Daughter of Gordon Ramsey, TV presenter, chef, and social media influencer Tilly Ramsey and pro Nikita Kuzmin dance the Charleston to Yes Sir! That’s My Baby by Firehouse Five Plus Two.

Liam: It’s seriously impressive. So much ENERGY.

Gordon’s eyes well with tears after his daughter finishes!

That looks complicated, and they pulled it off with aplomb, I reckon! Plenty of praise from the judges, Motsi saying how proud she is and how Tilly made the dance her own. Shirley calls her a ‘total powerhouse’ and says it was a beautiful performance. Typically harsh judge Craig gets a warning that Gordon’s watching, but he says the energy was fantastic.

It’s a massive jump up from last week! 34! And Gordon can’t stop crying – a bit like one of the chefs in Hells Kitchen he used to coach (!).

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 8
Motsi Mabuse 9
Shirley Ballas 9
Anton Du Beke 8

Total: 34 (last week: 21)

20.46 – Feedback from deaf viewers… it’s a good point this first one.

And feedback from other viewers:

Not all of them are fans of the judging…

20.43 – Hoping for an improvement this week is sports pundit and former rugby union player Ugo Monye and pro Oti Mabuse, who only got 18 last week. They’re doing the quickstep to Bring Me Sunshine by The Jive Aces.

Huge improvement from last week, says Shirley. Best left arm in the room, says Anton. Craig says it was definitely an improvement on last week. Motsi is pleasantly surprised.

The score must be higher than last week… and they are! It’s a big old 25.

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 5
Motsi Mabuse 7
Shirley Ballas 7
Anton Du Beke 6

Total: 25 (last week: 18)

20.39 – Rose is getting some praise in high places!

20.35 – BBC Breakfast and sport presenter Dan Walker and Nadiya Bychkova dance the Paso Doble to Giant by Calvin Harris and Rag N Boneman.

Dan’s dressed as the Gladiator, something Anton says was quite frightening (!). But he says he liked it, the energy and the power. Craig says it could have done with more Spanish line. I’ve no idea what that means.

I thought it was a middling performance, but the judges make it an improvement on last week…

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 7
Motsi Mabuse 6
Shirley Ballas 6
Anton Du Beke 7

Total: 26 (last week: 24 )

20.29 – Some tweets from fans of Rose:

20.27 – Dragon’s Den star and businesswoman Sara Davies MBE and Aljaž Škorjanec dance the Foxtrot to Dream A Little Dream Of Me by Cass Elliot.

The judges liked it, praising the simplicity, and the scores are massive, doubling last week’s total! That’s the highest of the night and the highest score for a Foxtrot in the history of the show, if I read those subtitles properly.

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 8
Motsi Mabuse 8
Shirley Ballas 9
Anton Du Beke 9

Total: 34 (last week: 17)

20.18 – IT’S TIME FOR ROSE!

Eastenders star and fellow deaf Rose Ayling-Ellis dances the salsa with Geovani Perni. The song is Cuba by The Gibson Brothers. Rose got 22 last week.

Rose is clearly counting to help her keep the beat. And this is full of energy. There’s a heart-stopping moment when Geovani swings her around upside down! The audience all engage in deaf applause, shaking their hands above their heads, I thought that was brilliant.

Liam: Several comments on the footwork from the judges, but they appear impressed.

Anton: You have it from the moment you started. Craig: Magnificent job. Motsi: You showed the best quality on your own. Always shining, I love it. Shirley: Gone up several notches, for sure.

A message from Rose’s boyfriend’s sister and her new husband, Camilla and Russell, from their honeymoon! In BSL with sutbtitles! Lovely. Rose is clearly emotional afterwards! They get 26! That’s an improvement from last week!

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 6
Motsi Mabuse 7
Shirley Ballas 6
Anton Du Beke 7

Total: 26 (last week: 22)

20.09Now it’s Peep Show and Mitchell & Webb star, comedian Robert Webb, dancing with Dianne Buswell, who dance the Tango to La Cumparsita by Machiko Ozawa.

Liam: Robert says he was trying to channel ‘Angry Tango Man’. He did look very stern!

Webb put in what looked like a parody performance last week but this looked better, a lot more serious. Shirley agrees – she says ‘signifant improvement.’

And the scores reflect that, they improve on last week massively, with 27!

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 7
Motsi Mabuse 7
Shirley Ballas 6
Anton Du Beke 7

Total: 27 (last week: 20)

20.01- Stand-up comedian and Loose Women presenter Judi Love and Graziano Di Prima Samba to Get Busy by Sean Paul.

Tonnes of energy on show there, they really went for it, and the crowd seem very pleased with their work. Motsi says ‘the life of samba was there.’ Shirley says she ‘wants to work in your launderette’ – a reference to the set they danced on.

Liam: Everyone in the audience loved that one, and so far, the judges did too!

Anton praises her twerk, which I think came up as ‘thrust’ in the live subtitles. Right now, we’ll take subtitles wherever we can get them, errors and all.

The judges score them one higher than last week!

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 6
Motsi Mabuse 7
Shirley Ballas 6
Anton Du Beke 6

Total: 25 (last week: 24)

19.52 – TV presenter AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington dance the Foxtrot to Tears Dry On Their Own by Amy Winehouse… they got a whopping 34 and topped the leader board last week, can they go one better?

It’s very graceful, smooth, looks professional. AJ must be in with a good chance of adding the Strictly crown to her victory in the second series of Celebrity Karaoke Club on ITV2 earlier this year.

Liam chips in from the twitter account: That was lovely to watch!

‘Absolutely amazing,’ says Craig. Motsi says they ‘took it up a notch.’ ‘Refined, elegant, poised’ says Shirley. There’s hardly been a negative so far. Anton praises the heel turn and just about everything else.

The scores are slightly lower than last week, and match John and Johannes. Not bad going, this competition is hotting up.

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 7
Motsi Mabuse 9
Shirley Ballas 7
Anton Du Beke 8

Total: 31 (last week: 34)

19.44 – Strictly’s first male same-sex couple, baker John Whaite and pro dancer Johannes Radebe dance the Cha Cha to Starstruck by Years & Years.

Mrs Charlie says they look like professionals, and they really do. It’s just alive, in synch and full of spark. These two were joint second on the leader board last week, where will they end up this week?

‘So synchronised’ and ‘fabulous’ says Motsi. Shirley says there’s ‘nothing you can’t do’ and says it was ‘outstanding.’  Olly Alexander from Years and Years sends a special message!

Liam says: It was quite the fiery performance with lots of planets and meteors in the background, but I felt like they held back at times.

I think the score’s going to be high, and it should be… it’s higher than last week!

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 8
Motsi Mabuse 8
Shirley Ballas 8
Anton Du Beke 7

Total: 31 (last week: 30)

19.37 – Actor Greg Wise and Karen Hauer are dancing Couple’s Choice to If You Could Read My Mind by Ultra Naté, Amber, Jocelyn Enriquez. This is emotional, it’s in memory of his sister Clare, who died of breast cancer and loved disco.

This is pretty funky and joyful, speeds up as it goes along. I thought that was great. Greg Wise is in tears as he finishes.

Liam: Oh, that was wonderful, beautiful and elegant. I hope he’s rewarded well by the judges.

Shirley says his sister sprinkled some disco magic on him. Anton praises how he worked as a partner. Craig says it was a bit cardboard cutout, no room for emotion from him, and this seems pretty cruel in the circumstances. Motsi brings it back a bit and says the energy was spot on.

Wise can hardly speak after, he’s clearly full of emotion. Real contrast in the scores between Craig and the other judges…

Liam: 3 was incredibly harsh from Craig. He really gave it his all in that dance, and we could see how much it meant to him, as well.

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 3
Motsi Mabuse 6
Shirley Ballas 7
Anton Du Beke 7

Total: 23 (last week: 24)

19.28 – Former Corrie star Katie McGlynn and Gorka Marquez are dancing the jive to Good 4 U by Olivia Rodrigo… and this looks very co-ordinated, if a bit slower than what I’d usually think of as a jive.

Motsi says Katie’s weight was too far back, but she kept the good times up. Shirley says it’s moving in the right direction, and Katie has an infectious personality. Craig just says he didn’t really like it, calls it ‘stumpy.’ This seems pretty harsh, and indicates Craig is back to his usual self after being nicer than usual last week.

The scores come in and they’re only a point down on last week!

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 4
Motsi Mabuse 6
Shirley Ballas 5
Anton Du Beke 6

Total: 21 (last week: 22)

19.20 – next it’s swimmer Adam Peaty and Katya Jones doing the Quickstep to Are You Gonna Be My Girl by Jet.

And boy it’s quick. And energetic. Mrs Charlie again thinks Peaty isn’t a natural on the dance floor, despite his five – yes five – Olympic medals.

Liam: Lots of lovely footwork here, and a fun track for them to dance along to, as well!

Motsi says there was a bit of a panic there, and suggests Peaty ‘breathes in and calm down.’ Shirley praises how he comes back from mistakes and asks for more ease next week. Then there’s some technical stuff from Anton which I struggle to catch on the live subtitles.

The scores – well they’re a lot lower than last week…

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 4
Motsi Mabuse 5
Shirley Ballas 5
Anton Du Beke 5

Total: 19 (last week: 30)

19.11 – Next we have actress and comedian Nina Wadia with Neil Jones. They’re doing the tango to Would I Lie To You? By Eurythmics. Last week they got 24.

I’d say this is a long way short of Rhys’s effort, as much of a fan as I am of Nina’s. Not much rhythm on show here, it’s pretty stilted.

Anton points out several mistakes, including Nina keeping her head too straight, she should be making a line with her spine apparently. Craig says the footwork is ropey. Motsi and Shirley add some positivity, mainly for effort. What will the scores say? Ooh it’s a bit low…

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 3
Motsi Mabuse 5
Shirley Ballas 5
Anton Du Beke 5

Total: 18 (last week: 24)

18.58 – first up is CBBC presenter Rhys Stephenson and Nancy Xu, who scored 27 last week. They dance the Cha Cha to Reach Out, I’ll Be There by Human Nature.

I thought Rhys looked smooth last week, but he’s even smoother this time around, almost kind of silky. Or maybe I’m not seeing it right. Anton and Craig both say it looked stiff, although Rhys also gets a lot of praise.

Judges scores:

Craig Revel-Horwood 7
Motsi Mabuse 8
Shirley Ballas 8
Anton Du Beke 7

They get a total of 30! An improvement on last week!

Here’s their dance:

18.50 – the judges are in! Nice to see Craig Revel-Horwood waving his hands in deaf applause!

There was some controversy last week when judge Shirley Ballas gave Rose a paltry 4. What will Ballas award Rose this week?

Just a reminder that we’ll be adding videos of each dance to this feed as soon as the Strictly Twitter account releases them.

18.45 – Welcome to this week’s live blog! You can check out last week’s live blog here.

Tonight’s a big night for Rose Ayling-Ellis and her fellow dancers as they find out which one of them will be the first to be eliminated.

The whole of the UK deaf community is hoping it won’t be Rose, and why should it, after her brilliant start last week?
