Six deaf men set off on cycling challenge to raise funds for deaf male health

Posted on July 5, 2022 by

Six deaf men from Bristol and the South West have started a cycling challenge from John O’Groats to Lands End, aiming to raise awareness of deaf men’s health.

The men are hoping to arrive at Lands End by 10th July – covering a total distance of 957 miles in 10 days!

Rory Mortimore, Russell Basey, Mark Pickford, Martyn Brook, Ed Stevens and Steve Bent are joined by support drivers Trevor Wilson and James Barnes.

Inspired by the walking accomplishments of 2 Deaf Foot, these men are trying to raise as much money as they can to fund local men’s health support groups – mainly to run workshops and cover the cost of BSL interpreters because as we all know, BSL-specific information and services for our community are very limited.

They hope that with this funding and other support, Bristol can lead the way in developing and designing services for our local community that meets deaf men’s needs.

These men are contributing to a new wave of Deaf people taking on these kinds of challenges and not waiting for other people to fix the problems that we can all see.
