The deaf health charity SignHealth have launched a new campaign called deaf together, aiming to tackle the inequality that deaf people face.
The charity have released a BSL video which can be seen here.
The charity says that this is a cross-sector campaign that “aims to deliver positive social change for all 12 million deaf people” and features groundbreaking research from the New Economics Foundation (NEF) and Social Research with Deaf People at Manchester University (SORD).
The campaign will be deaf-led, with an advisory group featuring 18 people of different ages and backgrounds, giving representation and the opportunity to share lived experiences.
James Watson-O’Neill, the charity’s Chief Executive, said:
“We’re determined to make progress on our journey towards achieving health equity for all deaf people. This campaign will make this a reality. SignHealth is setting up deaf together, but it is not our campaign. It’s led by our community because we know the only way to achieve change is for all deaf people to work together. Everyone is welcome to join this movement for change. Let’s do this! Because together we are unstoppable”.

This seems very well-meaning, but I don’t see anything with serious potential here.
You should be fighting tooth and nail for the social security rights of Deaf people that were established after the war, but have been unacceptably cut back.
The indifference towards this by Deaf charities looks almost like deliberate gaslighting, and I think it adds to the damage caused to many Deaf people’s mental health.
