Signs Alive Festival is a brand-new, family-friendly arts festival taking place in Sheepfolds Stables, Sunderland on Sat 27– Sun 28 June 2026. It’s a celebration of Deaf and disabled creativity, bringing together artists, performers, and families for a joyful and inclusive experience.

The idea for the Signs Alive Festival grew from my experience as a Deaf artist in the North East, where there are still very few Deaf artists and limited opportunities. I’ve become increasingly concerned about the next generation of Deaf young people, particularly the isolation many of them experience.

Through visiting schools and delivering workshops, I’ve met so many Deaf young people with big dreams — wanting to become dancers, singers, animators, and actors. However, many don’t know how to access these careers or how to navigate a hearing world, and often feel that these paths are not open to them.

Signs Alive Festival was created to change that. It gives young people the opportunity to see Deaf and disabled artists as role models, feel inspired, and realise that a career in the arts is possible. The festival is about breaking down barriers, building confidence, and showing clearly: we can do it.

I’ve also had the opportunity to attend and be part of several international Deaf film and arts festivals, including Deaffest UK, Hong Kong International Deaf Film Festival, Tokyo International Deaf Film Festival, and Clin d’Oeil. Through these experiences, I’ve seen first-hand how powerful festivals can be — bringing Deaf artists together, increasing visibility, and inspiring the next generation through real role models. That impact has played a big part in shaping the vision for the Signs Alive Festival.

Working alongside Surface Area Dance Theatre, we’ve created a programme that includes performances, workshops, exhibitions, and interactive activities. From visual storytelling and sign language to state-of-the-art immersive digital installations and hands-on experiences, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

We’re bringing together a diverse group of artists, including Deaf performers and disabled creatives, to showcase their work and connect with the community. It’s not just about watching — it’s about taking part, exploring, and celebrating together.

Signs Alive Festival is more than an event — it’s a step towards breaking down barriers in the arts and creating a more inclusive future.

We’d love for families, young people, and the wider community to join us and be part of this celebration.
