Sean Richards: Deaf Fun Golf Day for children and teens coming soon!

Posted on February 7, 2019 by

I’m really excited to tell you all about my upcoming charity called Sports4DeafKids. With this charity my aim is to promote accessible sports for deaf children who can attend events with their hearing siblings too.

I’m profoundly deaf and a BSL user and I loved participating in sports growing up. I attended lots of FYD sports events so I was really sad when they closed down. My particular favourite sports are football, table tennis, skiing and golf.

Admittedly, I came to golf later in life – after retiring from football! But I’ve developed a growing passion for the sport and I decided to get involved with England Deaf Golf by volunteering at the European Deaf Golf Open in 2017. I’ve continued my involvement and I am now the events coordinator and acting secretary.

My passion for accessible sporting events also stems from having children of my own. My son is hearing and my daughter is deaf and I noticed the massive difference in how many sporting events they could attend, so many classes and courses just were not accessible for my daughter. My son can go to anything and guarantee he will be involved, this isn’t the case for my daughter.

With England Deaf Golf and England Golf’s support I have set up a Deaf Fun Golf Day on February 23rd for deaf children and their siblings from the age of 4 to 18. The Deaf Agency is supporting this event too! CODA’s are also very welcome to attend.

It will be an exciting day packed with golfing games for beginners and also for those with more experience, and it’s a great chance to meet other deaf children and teenagers who love to play sport! It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played golf or if you’ve regularly played it for years, all are welcome!

There is also a driving range challenge where u can try and hit the giant dartboard. And, excitedly, there will be 4 golf pro slots (included in the day) so if you want to grab valuable time with a professional golf instructor it is important to email to book your places!

There will be 10 to 12.30pm and 1.30 to 4pm slots so if you’d like to book your slot for professional tuition be sure to email the below so you don’t miss out:

Sports4deafkids@mail.com or events.edg@outlook.com

For some family fun there is Adventure Golf (crazy mini golf) which is only an additional £3 Per person as they normally charge £6 per adult and £3.50 per child so quite a bargain!

To satisfy hungry bellies there is an Italian bar inside too! There is free car parking but be sure to add your car registration number upon arriving at reception.

Hopefully this golf fun day will be the first of many, please get in touch with me if there’s any questions about the day or if you’d like to see a particular event in future. It’s important we give young deaf generations the chance to thrive in sport!
