Deaf News: SignHealth launches text service for deaf people in crisis

Posted on September 11, 2019 by

The deaf mental health charity SignHealth, together with the text service Shout, has announced a new crisis text line for deaf people.

The service, which is available 24/7, will see trained staff and volunteers offer support to individuals experiencing issues such as suicidal thoughts, abuse or bullying.

Commenting on the announcement, SignHealth’s CEO James Watson-O’Neill, said the charity is “very pleased” to “make this service available to the deaf community”.

He said: “We are confident it will make a huge difference to Deaf people who need support when in a time of crisis.

“Getting the right support is important, especially with a mental health crisis.

“SignHealth’s new service, powered by Shout, aims to offer Deaf people immediate support by connecting them with a trained Shout volunteer promptly 24 hours a day.”

The announcement coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day, with charities and organisations sharing messages of support.

The text service can be reached by texting DEAF to 85258.

Messages to the number are confidential, and free on the EE, O2, Three and Vodafone networks.

More information about the service can be found on SignHealth’s website.
