Deafscope: Our Active Life = Healthy Minds fundraising challenge cycling around the Welsh coastline

Posted on September 17, 2020 by

Hello!

We at Deafscope are excited to announce that we have taken up an Active Life = Healthy Minds challenge- to raise funds for our organisation Deafscope Link CIC.

Deafscope is an online directory that helps members find deaf friendly and deaf owned business across the UK. Our office is based in Lye but we provide connections for deaf people nation wide.

By starting this Active Life= Healthy Minds challenge we are now reaching out for donations to support our bid to fundraise so that Deafscope Link CIC are able to continue providing future services for the Deaf and Deaf Usher community.

The money we raise would be for a 3 year plan to continue providing our services, such as advocacy, employment support, training, workshops, community day trips, community festival events for the Deaf and Deaf usher community.

Reaching our fundraising target would mean Deafscope and Deafscope link CIC would be saved and able to continue working, and we would be able to continue supporting our Deaf and Deaf usher community. The recent funding cuts have been severe and have affected our organisation therefore we have taken matters in our own hands and decided to try and raise the amount needed ourselves.

We feel that the Covid -19 lockdown has been extremely tough on the mind and body and especially so for the Deaf and Deaf Usher community – with so many feeling isolated for over four months. We feel it is time to get together and support each other and so this is our aim to reach out to our community and do our best.

What does our challenge involve then? Well, the challenge involves two Deaf men, one of whom is Deaf usher (partially blind), cycling on a tandem bike from the West Midlands to Wales and all the way round the Welsh coastline.

We want to raise awareness about keeping active and healthy in order to get and maintain a strong body and mind. Who is doing the challenge? Ishtiaq Hussain aged 46 ( the managing director for Deafscope) and Daniel Jay –Cropp, 38, who are both based In Lye, Stourbridge where our office headquarters are.

Ishtiaq and Daniel will be uploading daily vlogs of their journey as well as live streaming on all social media for you to witness their journey.  The challenge started on Monday 24th August 2020 and we aim to arrive back in the west midlands around September 22nd. At the time of writing this we are currently on day 15 and heading to Newport.

Deafscope takes great pride in supporting the Deaf and Deaf Usher community ensuring they have equal and accessible opportunities. We work to connect the Deaf community and empower Deaf people to reach their full potential. It is our top priority to keep Deafscope alive but we do ask for the community’s support.

You can find our Justgiving page below, and all donations are greatly appreciated! Huge thanks and kindest regards from the Deafscope team.
