Here at Audiovisability we are very excited to let you know about a live stream event taking place tonight at 10.15pm (UK time.)

The Calypso 2022 project is bringing together deaf and hearing professionals from across three continents in what is a truly ground-breaking music and visual arts project based on the island of Barbados.

Internationally renowned rap artists Sean Forbes and Warren ‘Wawa’ Snipe from the USA will be performing with steel pans and percussion together with the Barbadian Deaf community.

Drawing on Calypso’s vibrant history, the project’s activities emphasise the culture of the island as well as taking a wider look at deafness in the world at large.

Calypso 2022 will bring together deaf and hearing musicians, artists, film makers, and writers from across the UK, USA and Barbados.  Music is a powerful expressive tool in society and in our digital age often attracts and inspires people from all corners of the world. This project will draw on the vibrant history of Calypso music on the island of Barbados, blending it with Hip-Hop and digital music, to emphasise the island’s culture as well as looking at deafness and the world at large.

The message of the concert will be loud and clear: deaf people can do anything – except hear perfectly – and deaf Barbadians demand that their voice is heard.

At Audiovisability we are passionate in the belief that deaf people can, and do, engage with and make music. Our organisation is deaf-led and is a registered music charity.

It is society – not deafness – that disables people. The Calypso project highlights this and we hope it will inspire a new generation of deaf Barbadians. Our project has a strong community focus involving Barbadian people from all walks of life.

Professional Deaf musician Ruth Montgomery from the UK is the person behind the concept. Ruth believes that music can be the bridge between the worlds of deaf and hearing people. However, much still remains to be done with regards to music education.

Audiovisability focus on making audio visible, showcasing the talents and tenacity of the lived experiences of deaf people.

Come and join us tonight – we hope to see you there!
