A short documentary made by the BBC in association with the Open University has shed more light on what it’s like to be deaf in prison, a subject that has also recently been highlighted in the BBC’s Reunion series written by William Mager. Watch it below:

Lumo TV: TV programmes in BSL for the Deaf community
Good to see this important issue getting traction. I took an interest about 15 years ago and made a public FOI request to get more information and for others to use.
However, getting progress is like pulling teeth. I believe Daniel did an excellent report for the Howard League, outlining the issues, but I don’t think a great deal of improvement has come since.
Hopefully, with the Gauke report, politicians will look again at whether prison is the right remedy for most crimes.
